The Verse
Etatdyeva aksharam Brahma etatdyeva aksharam param |
Etatdyeva aksharam jnatva yo yat ichchati Tat || – Katopanishat 1.2.16

Meaning: This word (Om) is eternal Brahman. This word(Om) is the Universal Self. One who understands this word(Om) as eternal, gets That which he desires.

Notes: In the earlier verse, Lord Yama(Lord of Death) said that the Ultimate Reality is nothing but the word Om.  He further elaborates that Om itself is the Eternal Reality which is also the Universal Self.

One who knows the Om as the Eternal Truth, gets That which he desires.  It means that the seeker who would like to attain the Ultimate Reality achieves his desire by realizing that the Ultimate Reality is nothing but Om. Here the word That refers to the Ultimate Reality.

Notice the strategic pun in the verse by using the Sanskrit word aksharam. It means that which cannot be destroyed, i.e.  eternal. It also means letter(symbol) indicating Om . Fantastic!!

Our supreme goal in our lives is to attain the Ultimate Reality Om, so that we will not born again and again to suffer due to accumulated  karmas.

Om Namah Shivaya ||
