Lord Ganesha with Buddhi and Siddhi

Lord Ganesha with His Consorts Buddhi and Siddhi (Source: Google)

Folks,

Hari Om! Namaste!!

It is our privilege to discuss on our friend and favorite deity Lord Ganesha! As we have understood, he is very special in many ways.

He is always worshiped first. He is the remover of obstacles. He occupies strategic chakra muladhara in our psychic system to bestow us both material prosperity(bhoga) and liberation(moksha).  His turning of the trunk also symbolizes it. Anything more know? Yes! Here is somewhat personal question on Lord Ganesha:  🙂

Is Lord Ganesha Married? If yes, who is his consort !?

It helps to be aware that this topic is slightly controversial. The marital status and names of his wives varies  greatly from place to place.

In India, in some areas people believe that Lord Ganesha is unmarried. In some other places, the Lord is considered to be a married deity with wives Buddhi and Siddhi.  Some others believe that Lord Ganesha is married and his wives are Riddhi and Siddhi.   It is all very confusing. Then, which one is correct?

We need to go back to our Scriptures for an authoritative answer. According to Scriptures Ganesha Purana and Mudgala Purana, Lord Ganesha is married to Buddhi and Siddhi, daughters of Lord Brahma. Period. No need for any further evidence.

What does it really mean? Buddhi  means intelligence. Siddhi is the ultimate achievement, i.e. liberation(moksha). Riddhi  means progress, prosperity and material enjoyment(bhoga). Buddhi, Siddhi and Riddhi are all Lord Ganesha’s  own powers. When they are personified, they are considered as his consorts.

How can you say that – “powers of the deities are their consorts”?

Just think about it. It is well known that Lord Shiva’s power is Shridevi Parvati. In other words, Lord Shiva’s dynamic power is nothing but his wife, Shridevi Parvati. Similarly with other deities too. e.g. Lord Vishnu’s dynamic power is none other than consort Shri Lakshmi Devi. Thus, Lord Ganesha’s wives  Buddhi, Riddhi and Siddhi  are his personified dynamic powers. Got it?

What is the secret meaning of Lord Ganesha and his consorts?

The presiding deities of intelligence(Buddhi), prosperity(Riddhi) and liberation(moksha or Siddhi) are Shri Saraswati Devi, Shri Lakshmi Devi and Shridevi Parvati. So, it suggests that Lord Ganesha has the power of all of these three deities. OK. Is there an evidence from our Scriptures?

Of course, yes! Let us look at our Scripture Ganapati Upanishat. It says:

Twam Shakti trayatmakah | – Ganapati Upanishat

Meaning: (Lord Ganesha!) You are the embodiment of three powers.

What are those three powers of Lord Ganesha?

Jnana(knowledge), Iccha(desire), and Kriya(action) are the fundamental universal powers. They are ruled by Shri Saraswati Devi, Shri Lakshmi Devi and Shridevi Parvati respectively.  They correspond to Lord Ganesha’s powers Buddhi, Riddhi and Siddhi respectively as discussed above.

I am an executive in a hurry(need to run for meeting! 😉 ). What is the take home from the entire discussion?

Yes! It is officially confirmed and declared: Lord Ganesha is married! He has two consorts Buddhi and Siddhi. Lord Ganesha’s wives are nothing but his dynamic powers.

He is also the embodiment of three fundamental powers Buddhi(intelligence), Riddhi(prosperity) and Siddhi(liberation). If we pray Lord Ganesha with devotion, he will definitely  bestow us knowledge, material enjoyment and liberation. All covered! Can we ask anything more?

What are we waiting for? Let us pray Lord Ganesha:

Parabrahma roopam Ganesham bhajema |

Let us pray Lord Ganesha who is the Supreme Brahman (for his Grace) .
